So is he saying we shouldn't desire what we don't have, but just hope for it instead?

I think it just means be gratful for what you have now. You can still hope for and desire things for the future, but just don't do it to the point that you forget all that you have now.
I really like the concept of looking at what you have now as things that were once only dreams/hopes at one point in your life. It gives me a better perspective on life I think.
